McDONOUGH — A few years back, Henry County saw a cheerleader reach the top step and become Cheerleader of the Year. Fast forward to this year and Ola High's Stacey Schmuhl won the Ashley Taube GCCA Coach of the Year award.

When asked about how a coach even gets selected to this honor, Schmuhl mentions the nomination process and more behind it.

"This award starts with a nomination process," Schmuhl said. "Other coaches around the state submit nominations of coaches they feel should be recognized for their work as a coach. From there, nominees have an application process. It includes coaching accomplishments, community involvement, two letters of recommendations and an essay on your coaching philosophy."

The award isn't just a local county-based award or region award for that matter. The fact that Schmuhl is recognized around the state of Georgia speaks volumes of the work she does that's often missed. Putting her feelings into words about the honor was difficult in a good way as Schmuhl was excited and overwhelmed.

"I'm incredibly honored and I cried when I found out," Schmuhl admitted. "To have other coaches celebrate and recognize your work is incredible. I have looked up to so many of them throughout my years of coaching and admire them. It's an honor to be recognized by them at this level. This year the award was renamed after the passing of Coach Ashley Taube of Mill Creek. She was an incredible coach and person and to receive it while honoring her — makes it even more special."
