CHEERLEADING: Several first timers named to GR all-star squad. - The Daily News Online

It was a new collection of Genesee Region League All-Star Cheerleaders this winter as 14 of the 2018-19 stars were making their first appearance on the team. Only Byron-Bergen's Tabitha Fuller (three years), Pembroke's Kayla Heinlein (three years) and Elba's Maddy Cline (two years) were making a return appearance to the squad.

The Coaches of the Year, though, are no strangers, as Penny Cole and Heather Kelley have been coaching cheerleading at Holley for 30 and 22 years, respectively, and they have led the Hawks to 19 Genesee Region League titles and three Section V awards. This was the fourth time they were awarded the GR Coaches of the Year.

Here are the 2018-19 Genesee Region League Cheerleading All-Stars:

Trinity Amico, Alexander — Freshman, first-time all-star — Team highlight was finishing second at the GR competition, losing by only .05 of a point. Her career highlights thus far have been making the varsity team in eighth-grade and being named an all-star as a freshman.

Miah Urban, Alexander — Senior, first-time all-star — Her highlight for the year was having a team that grows and succeeds more every year, while her career highlight was being a team captain each of the last two seasons. She plans to attend college to become a substance abuse and alcohol abuse counselor and to eventually coach cheerleading.

Emma Hopfinger, Attica — Senior, first-time all-star — Nominated for a sportsmanship award, her team highlights for the season were being the GR champions, placing second at sectionals and qualifying for states, going to states and winning the first three competitions this season. Her career highlights included winning the GR championship two years in a row. She plans to go into the cosmetology field.

Victoria Thompson, Attica — Senior, first-time all-star — Her team highlights this winter included winning the GR title and placing second at the sectional championship and having the opportunity to go to states. Her career highlights were winning the GR two years in a row, going to states and placing second at sectionals. Plans to attend the University at Buffalo to major in architecture.

Tabitha Fuller, Byron-Bergen — Senior, three-time all-star — Her team highlight for the season was having the closest scored regional competition in years for the Bees, while her career highlights included being on varsity in seventh grade, winning the GR title two years in a row and being named a Ronald McDonald All-Star this season. Plans to attend Keiser University in Florida to get a Bachelor's degree in nursing to pursue a career as a Navy nurse.

Mackenzie Rosse, Byron-Bergen — Senior, first-time all-star — A four-year varsity cheerleader, she earned her first all-star nod this season and her team highlights were placing second the GR championship and performing their Grinch dance. Her career highlights included winning the GR title, placing second at the GR championship twice, placing fourth at sectionals and placing first at Empire. She plans to attend college.

Maddy Cline, Elba — Sophomore, two-time all-star — A Flyer and a back, her team highlights were cheering at the basketball and football games, competing at competitions, team bondings and making new friendships. Her career highlights included placing third at the Empire Winter Class and the GR championship and becoming a flyer and having an amazing group of girls to support her.

Elizabeth Kowalski, Elba — Senior, first-time all-star — Team captain, her season highlights included cheering at games, competing at four competitions and getting to bond with everyone on the team. Her career highlights included placing third at the Empire Winter Class, the GR championship and the Heart and Soul competition and doing the makeup for the other girls. Plans to take the cosmetology state boards, get her license and work in a salon.

Jordyn Feinck, Holley — Junior, first-time all-star — Backspot for the Hawks who placed second at Mercy and Empire Cheer, third in Genesee Region Division 1 and sixth at Small B sectionals. Her team highlights were working together as a team and enjoying what they were doing, while her career highlights have been going to a nursing home and wishing them Merry Christmas and raising money for the Ronald McDonald House. She hopes to continue to cheer in college.

Tyra Shepard, Holley — Junior, first-time all-star — Her team highlights included getting second at the Mercy competition and at Empire Cheer, third in the Genesee Region and sixth at sectionals. Her career highlights have included being a fall cheerleading scholar athlete in 2018, volunteering at the nursing home and the Ronald McDonald House fundraiser.

Emily Fearby, Oakfield-Alabama — Junior, first-time all-star — A varsity cheerleader since eighth-grade, her team highlights for the year were rebuilding the varsity squad after losing many seniors following last year and working with the new flyers to help them learn and become stronger cheerleaders. Her career highlights have included being a team captain, doing one-man stunts and accomplishing her back tuck and getting to spend many years as a varsity cheerleaders with her amazing coaches.

Alea Williams, Oakfield-Alabama — Sophomore, first-time all-star — A varsity cheerleader for three years, her team highlights this season were working with a young team and watching them grow and improve and watching the team grow together as cheer sisters. Her career highlights have included being named a GR all-star, cheering the boys at home games and the sectional game in Naples and being named the most improved cheerleader in eighth-grade.

Kayla Heinlein, Pembroke — Senior, three-time all-star — She was named an Eddie Meath All-Star, a Ronald McDonald All-star and she won the Hannah's Helping Hand Award. Her team highlight for the year was getting first at the heart and soul competition, while her career highlights included getting first at both the Avon competition and the Brockport Rumble competition. Plans to become an ultrasound technician.

Abby Konieczny, Pembroke — Senior, first-time all-star — Her team highlight for the winter was taking first at the HF-L Heart and Soul competition, while her career highlights included winning both the Avon Braves Battle competition in 2018 and the Brockport Rumble competition. Plans to attend GCC for two years in the teaching program and then transfer to Brockport to major in eduction and mathematics.

Maddie Spear, Wheatland-Chili — Senior, first-time all-star — A three-time team captain, she was named team MVP twice and won the Coaches' Award at a competition this season. Her team highlight for the season was winning a GR division title and placing at sectionals for the first time, while her career highlights included being two-time league champions, cheering at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland and being a versatile cheerleader throughout her career. Plans to attend SUNY Brockport for human services and coaching.

Vanessa Nowicki, Wheatland-Chili — Senior, first-time all-star — A team captain for the last three seasons and a team MVP, her season highlights were winning at the GR championship and placing at sectionals for the first time ever. Her career highlights included being two-time league championships, cheering at the Blue Cross Arena and being the base, back and front all in one routine. Plans to attend Johnson and Wales University to study baking and pastry arts.

Morgan Davis, Kendall — Senior, first-time all-star — A backspot, her season and career highlights included taking second at regionals. She plans to attend nursing school.

The "fork" ratings are based primarily on food quality and preparation, with service and atmosphere factored into the final decision. Reviews are based on one unsolicited, unannounced visit to the restaurant.
