SOUTH PRAIRIE, N.D. - The best high school cheer squads from across the state took over the gym at South Prairie Saturday for the 2019 Winter State Cheer Competition.

Roughly 200 athletes from 22 different high schools competed and squared off in team competitions, stunt groups, all-around cheers, and the "jump off."

"It goes and shows hard work we've put through practices and other things going on in our lives, and we just give it all on the mat," said Madeleine Billings, Dickinson High senior cheerleader.

"We go to school, we work, we have jobs and homework, and we still dedicate our time to come in, and then to show it off of what we've been working for, is just such a relieving moment once you hit the mat, that you did what you were supposed to do," said Joslynn Gonzales, Minot High senior cheerleader.

The Bishop Ryan cheer squad won its third state championship Saturday.
