WAYLAND — Wayland-Cohocton Central School inducted Jane Schubmehl Bernard and Joel R. Schaffer into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 8. A reception was held in the cafeteria for friends and family of both inductees including personal remarks from Rose Fox, Jim Burke and Ellsworth Trip. Both inductees spoke about their experiences as an athlete and coach and shared memories and stories.
Following the reception, an induction ceremony was held in the field house between the games being played against Dansville by both the boys and girls varsity teams. The inductees were presented with plaques. Plaques will also be added to the Hall of Fame display in the field house lobby.
Jane Schubmehl Bernard was a three-sport athlete competing in cross-country, track and cheerleading. It is her outstanding and exemplary performance in cheerleading that was honored by the Hall of Fame committee. Jane was a Ronald McDonald Cheerleading All Star her senior year, as well as the Greater Rochester Cheerleading Individual Champion. Freshman through senior years she was a Livingston County All-Star. She was a Creative Cheerleading Champion in 1994 and in 1995 missed the first place honor by just one point. As a four-time Universal Cheerleading Association (CA) All-Star, Jane earned a trip to London, England and attended during her sophomore year of high school. She was a three-time Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) All-Star Jump Champion.
With her home Eagle Squad, Jane was a cheerleading team MVP in 1994 and 1995 and served as team captain her junior and senior years. She earned the Outstanding Ability and Sportsmanship Award in 1995, the 800-point award, the 550-point award and was a Scholar Athlete.
During her time as a member of the Eagle Squad, the team earned Section V patches five times. The team earned five LCAA Champion titles and was Greater Rochester Cheerleading Champion in 1994. In 1994 and 1995 the team earned first place in the Greater Rochester tournament, second place in 1993 and third place in 1991 and 1995. During her time on the squad, the cheerleaders were five-time Creative Cheer Champions and four-time Keshequa Competition Champions.
In addition to two other sports, Jane was a member of National Honor Society, served as track captain her senior year and was secretary of her class three years. She earned the Nice Kid Award, was a member of the Student Service Organization, Close-up and the Peer Leadership Program. Jane attended Close Up also.
Joel R. Shaffer has been a force of coaching influence in the Wayland-Cohocton District. During his own high school career, he was an accomplished three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and baseball. He played four years of college soccer and one year of baseball at Hamilton College. After college, Joel's teaching career began along with his love of coaching.
For fifty-plus years, Joel has coached over 135 teams in various sports at all levels. Even after Joel retired from teaching, his commitment to coaching continues. He has instilled teamwork, motivation, determination and sportsmanship in his athletes; all of which are lifelong skills. Joel was one of the original members of the Cohocton Sports Boosters. For over thirty years, along with a handful of other wonderful individuals, he has been a driving force behind the success of the Cohocton Sports Complex with countless hours flipping burgers in the concession stand and pitching in wherever work was required. His favorite sport as a player is soccer; as a spectator, it is basketball; and as a coach, it is baseball.
Joel will always be loved for his coaching motto, "Have fun. Play hard, Play clean. Be humble in victory and defeat." A motto he exemplifies to his athletes, students and community in his own behavior daily.
