TRENTON, NJ - NP Cheer won their first ever New Jersey Group 1 State Championship on Saturday!
In just two short years, the New Providence High School Cheerleading team has become more than students promoting spirit and enthusiasm for their school and town. The team that once began and ended with their football counterparts, are now the New Jersey NJCDCA Group 1 State Champions.
In 2016, the program had 24 Cheerleaders of all grades on one team. In 2017, the program grew to 28 Cheerleaders and competed for the first time as an Intermediate division -- making their first appearance at the NJCDCA State Competition. This division is still very competitive although does not qualify a team for a Group State title.
In 2018, the program has grown to 44 Cheerleaders between Varsity and JV teams. Both teams have competed with 16 Cheerleaders throughout the Winter season, culminating at the NJCDCA State championship where JV competed in their respective division and Varsity moved to the advanced division.
"Throughout every competition, Varsity continuously fell short to David Brearly but still found themselves tied for first place in qualifying points," said NPHS Cheerleading Coach Alexis Jacqueney. "With routines not going as completely planned for both teams, we knew it was going to be close in the end." Jacqueney explained, there are two panels of judging -- one for the division and one for the group championship. David Brearly placed in their division whereas New Providence had not. "However, the group championship judging saw something different and awarded NP cheer their first ever State Championship," said Jacqueney.
