ROCHESTER — In a spirited performance, the Dansville cheerleaders placed fourth at the Section V Cheerleading Championships at RIT.

And they did so with heavy hearts.

Prior to their classification, longtime cheerleading coach Phyllis Greene was honored as this year's 'Section V Coach of the Year.'

Accepting the award in honor of his late wife was Larry Greene.

Phyllis, 67, passed away Jan. 30 after a battle with cancer.

In 20 years as head coach, Greene guided the Mustangs to 12 LCAA titles, five Section V championships, one NYS crown and one national title.

This year's roster included Ashley Greene, Jada Gay, Skylar Hinrich, Taylor Mann, Emma Masten, Carly McKinney, Morgan Oldfield, Gracey Sherer and Zara Sullivan.

Char Bennett was the assistant coach.

The Perry (Division 2C) and Avon (Division 2B) cheerleaders each won first place in their respective classifications.

Both Perry and Avon each qualified for the NYSPHSAA Championships back at RIT this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

Avon is the defending champion in Division 2 Small.

The "fork" ratings are based primarily on food quality and preparation, with service and atmosphere factored into the final decision. Reviews are based on one unsolicited, unannounced visit to the restaurant.
